Attempting to configure 20+ Dev units; solid red, flashing green LEDs; config. app not working/ time section greyed-out.

I've got 22 new AudioMoth Dev units, and am attempting to configure them using the MacOS app. After setting the switch to Custom, plugging in the Micro SD card, attaching the power cable from the battery pack in the Dev case, and connecting the USB-micro connection to my laptop (via a USB-C to USB-A dongle, which connects the USB-A end of the USB-micro cable), the green LED flashes every second and the red LED stays solid. According to the LED code key, this should not happen with a new AudioMoth unit.

I've tried several different USB-micro cables including one labeled for both charging and data, restarted my laptop, and so on. The LEDs don't change and the configuratoin app time window is greyed-out.

Any thoughts as to what's going wrong?

Hi, The flashing green and solid LED in CUSTOM mode means that the time has not been set on the AudioMoth and it is waiting for the acoustic chime to be played from the smartphone app to set the time. Once this is set, the AudioMoth will then start following the configured settings. If you switch to DEFAULT, the AudioMoth will make a continous recording with the current settings even if the time has not be set. To configure the AudioMoth to a specific configuration and to set the time, using the Config App, you need to switch to USB/OFF and then the AudioMoth will connect to you computer via the USB cable.

There is a quick setup guide here:

Audiomoth not connecting to computer

I have a handful of new devices and followed instructions to configure.

However, the devices are not recognized by my computer. I tried 3 different USBs, two different audiomoths, many different USB ports, and two different computers. When I plug it in (setting is USB/Off) the green light appears, so it seems something is happening but nothing shows up on my computer. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the message. Is the AudioMoth Configuration App clock greyed out when plugged into USB or are the seconds ticking?

What operating system were the computers you tried?

Configuration App not working

Hi,

I bought an audiomoth device several months ago. When I first bought it, I was able to use the Audiomoth Configuration app very easily to set it up as seen in online guides. Three months ago I tried to configure it again for the second time and this time the configuration app and time app did not show the time. When connecting the audiomoth device, nothing changed in the configuration app, I did not get the details of the device and I did not get the time, although the audiomoth itself was blinking just fine and I am following exactly the same procedure and device I did last spring when it worked.

I have uninstalled the apps and reinstalled them, used different cables, and three different laptops but the configuration app does not work on any of the laptops. Is this a software issue? Since I encountered this problem…

Hi Orestis,

If you plug in the AudioMoth without batteries, with the switch in the USB/OFF position, does the green LED light up? Can you confirm what operating system you are using.

Are you sure the USB cable that you are using is a data cable and not a charging cable. The time that the apps show is the time that is coming from the AudioMoth. These are blank because the app cannot establish communication with the AudioMoth. Most of the connection problems are caused by the use of a charging cable that does not have data lines.

Hi all, I try to connect AudioMoth 1.1.0 version with configuration app and flash app, but it shows No AudioMoth Found.

Can anyone help please.

Hi, As Juan says, most connection problems are due to the USB cable being a charging cable and not having data lines. These aren't marked so you typically can't tell from their appearance. Try another cable first that you know works with data transfer. What operating system are you using? If it is Linux there are some additional installation steps at the end of the page here - https://www.openacousticdevices.info/applications. Finally, if you are using Windows there are occasional driver issues, particularly if you have previously used Easy Log from Lascar Electronics which incorrectly assumes the same PID and VID as AudioMoth. Check the cable first. Alex

Moth not being recognized by PCs

Hi, I have an AudioMoth and I haven't tried to use it since a year ago or so. It's less than two years old. I can't get it to be recognized by either of my Windows 11 computers. Power to the device occurs but nothing in the device manager. I have tried installing drivers from Silicon Labs to no success. It used to work with my old computer running a much older Windows OS. I'm thinking software got corrupted on the AudioMoth. Multiple cables, multiple computers, multiple drivers. Batteries removed. I give up. I can't see a reset switch anywhere on the AudioMoth device. I get a solid green light on the device so there's power but no life.

Hi, I think it is unlikely to be the AudioMoth. Nearly all connection problems are the USB cable being a charging cable with no data lines or a Windows driver issue. What operating system are you using? Anything newer than Windows 7 shouldn't require a driver as it will use the default ones. Have you used an EasyLog data logger from Lascar Electronics on these computers? Their driver incorrectly claims the same USB PID and VID.

It's possible to put the AudioMoth back into serial bootloader mode so that the firmware can be reflashed. This uses a different USB protocol so likely still works if the standard one has a driver issue. Select 'Show Manual Switch Instuctions' under the menu in the Flash App. This will guide you to connect the two 'PROG' pins together whilst powering up the AudioMoth so that it starts in serial bootloader mode.

I think the cable or driver issue is more likely however. Alex

Hydromoth problems

Hi,

I bought 5 Hydromoths in January 2025. 2 of them are having strange malfunctions. The other 3 will no longer connect to my computer with the configure app. The light doesn't come on when I connect them to the computer. The cord I'm using seems to work fine for other units.

1) is only recording for about 12 hours and then abruptly stops. It still has plenty of battery and plenty of space on the SD card. I've tried reinstalling the firmware, but didn't help.

2) Another recorder consistently has the clock running fast. I deployed it for about 48 hours (20 sec. out of every minute) and when I retrieved it had closer to 72 hours worth of recordings. I've used the same one 3 times, and this happens every time. I don't know how to fix this.

Thanks!

Hi Julia,

Can you use the 'Summarise AudioMoth Files' option under the 'Process' menu in the Config App to generate a summary of one of the SD cards which stopped early to see what is happening.

The clock running fast is sometimes a sign of humidity damage to the HydroMoth. Can you contact andy@openacousticdevices.info about this one, and confirm when the HydroMoth was purchased.

Audio Moth connection issues

Hello,

I have 2 brand new audio moths purchased a few months ago and as yet unused. I have reviewed all of the similar posts regarding connection issues with audio moths and computers. I have tested a total of 6 cables including a data cable bought new specifically for this purpose and a second very high quality cable I use specifically for data transfer. I have tried them in all 5 of the USB ports on my laptop and 3 USB and one USB c port on two separate docking stations (a total of 12 different ports).

The green light flickers on both units as it is plugged in and my computer sounds the connection notification. It then immediately disconnects and the light does not come on. When I wiggle the cables in the micro usb ports (which are extremely loose) the connection to my laptop and the green light…
