GPS switched off after 10 seconds

Hi, I'm using AudioMoth Dev with an attached GPS board.

I recorded for about 10 hours (after enabling GPS for time and location setting in the configuration app) and while it produced the WAV files for the whole time, the GPS fixed ("Received GPS fix") only in the first 10 seconds and then was switched off.

Does anyone know what might have caused that to happen? If it managed to fix why should it be switched off?

Perhaps the last three lines in the GPS txt file can help figure this out:

18/11/2025 08:49:52.000 UTC: Time was updated. The internal clock was 81ms fast.

18/11/2025 08:49:52.000 UTC: Actual sample rate will be 15997.206 Hz.

18/11/2025 08:49:52.001 UTC: GPS switched off.

Help would be much appreciated!

Hi Dana,

That's the intended behaviour. The GPS is only powered up before and after each individual recording or recording period in order to update the time. It then switches off to avoid draining the batteries during the recording.

How were you intending on using the GPS data? There is another variant of the firmware - AudioMoth-GPS-Sync - https://www.openacousticdevices.info/gps-sync - which powers the GPS continously during the recordings in order to make recordings that are accurate in time to a few micro seconds.
