However, I was surprised to be automatically (as far as I can tell) subscribed for email notifications for all posts.

I can turn them off, but may I suggest reconsidering having them turned on by default for all users? Many people will just ignore the emails or mark them as spam rather than manually unsubscribing, which will then tank your spam rating.
