I bought three AudioMoth 1.2.0 on the last GroupGet. When they are plugged into the computer I get a message that reads USB device not recognized. Under device manager it shows "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". I get a steady green light when the switch is on USB/OFF and plugged into USB. It is not recognized by the Flash or Configuration app. It is the same with all three audiomoths. I have tried the paperclip FLASH method with no change. Any ideas?
Hy Gideon, in my case, i "fixed" this Problem in switching to an other computer. I think it has tu do something with an incompatibility with the USB-Controller on the Motherboard - just guessing.... .
I hope itis some kind of usefull for you, knowing that its not an fixing the Problem regards
Thank for the top Martin.
I have tried connecting to now three different Window machines and one Mac, still with no luck.
Hi, Did you manage to resolve this? All the AudioMoth will have had the current firmware installed via USB at the factory so problems with the USB connection typically end up being cable or driver issues. Did you manage to try a different cable? Alex
@Alex Rogers I have tried a couple different cables, including one that I bought specifically because it said that it was capable of data transfer. I suppose it is possible that the cable is still the problem, but the device is noticed by Windows (with an error message) but not "recognized". The charge only cable I was using before showed up no where in Windows.
What drivers are needed? I was under the understanding, after reading some comments in the forum, that there were no drivers required in Windows.
Much Thanks
@Gideon Ney You only need to install drivers on older Windows machines. Windows 10 and Mac should normally work fine straight away. The "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" is very unusual and I haven’t seen report or experienced that before. This sounds like a hardware issue which is strange if it is affecting all three devices in the same way.
When you say ‘I’ve tried the paper FLASH method’ what did you manage to do? Did they connect to the Flash App when you did this? Did you manage to update the firmware this way?
.
Did you use the same USB cord ? Maybe this could be an issue too, some USB-Cords are made to be an Powersupply and have no "Data pupose"
Thank you both for the help. It was in fact a problem with the cable. Even though it was purchased specifically because it was suppose to be capable of data transfer, that apparently was not the case. What an frustrating standard USB is.
Great. I'm glad this got resolved. It's nearly always the cable!
