Initial advices

Dear Experienced Users of AudioMoth

I am absolutely new in this field, and need a support from very beginning.

We plan to set up a network of AudioMoth devices in several protected areas in Armenia for PAM focused on birds.

Within that framework, we think about maximal optimization of the logistics and operational procedures. So, possible scenarios can be (if they are technically doable at all): Scenario A

1. there are some clusters of of solar powered devices (e.g. per ecosystem) which record sound and transfer recordings to the single station.

  1. We download the recordings from the station once per every 6 months

Scenario B (most desirable)

1. there are some clusters of solar powered devices equipped with some Smart systems (and I do not know what is that), which record sound, analyze it right a way and transfer data to the single station.

  1. We download the data from the station once per every 12 months.

Scenario C (least desirable)

1. there are battery powered devices, which record sound,

  1. We download the data and change batteries every month.

Now the questions: 1. Which scenario is possible?

  1. What can help me (a beginner in this field) to assemblage the system for the most preferable and realistic scenario?

Hi,

Scenarios A and B are feasible but you'll need to build and program some custom hardware. For C, you can just buy the kit and deploy it, so to some degree it depends on how much development time and budget you have. What are you recording? The data and battery life are largely determined by the sample rate and the recording schedule. Many deployments will use duty cycles such as recording one minute in every ten to increase deployment times.

The Config App will tell you the energy and storage requirements of any schedule. The example below records for one minute in every ten at 32kHz. The larger AudioMoth Dev case uses D-cell batteries with a capacity of about 10,000mAh, so this schedule would last for 500 days, and require a 512GB SD card. You would only need to change the SD card and batteries once every 12 months.
