About the AudioMoth Chime App

Once an AudioMoth has been configured using the Configuration App, it will remember applied settings such as sample rate and recording schedule, even when it loses power. However this is not the case for the clock. For an AudioMoth to keep track of the current time (in order to follow its recording schedule), it must either be set by the Configuration App and have batteries connected to it, or the clock must be set using the AudioMoth Mobile App.

If you’ve configured an AudioMoth but it’s lost power at any point, switching it to CUSTOM will start it listening for the mobile app chime to synchronise its clock.

Once you’ve configured your AudioMoth you can take it into the field, put in the batteries and switch to CUSTOM. Your AudioMoth’s red LED should be lit and the green should flash, signifying it’s listening for a chime. Make sure to unmute media on your phone and open the app. Press the chime button in the app and watch for the green LED to flash rapidly. When the chime has been successfully recognised by the AudioMoth the green LED will go solid and the red LED will switch off. After a short delay the device will start the previously configured recording schedule.

You can also set the clocks of multiple devices simultaneously using the app. Simply place them next to each other, set them all to CUSTOM and play the chime.

A secondary benefit of the AudioMoth Mobile App is the ability to set the location of the device when you deploy it. By enabling location before playing the chime and allowing the app to obtain your current co-ordinates, the deployment location will also be encoded into the chime and saved to the AudioMoth.

All recordings made by the device will have this location saved to its information header and can be viewed later in AudioMoth Play by clicking “Show file information”.

You can ensure that the clock/location is correctly synchronised every time you deploy an AudioMoth, you can require the mobile app chime whenever it’s switched to CUSTOM by using the following setting on the Advanced tab of the AudioMoth Configuration App.

When this setting is used, switching the device to CUSTOM will make it wait for the chime to play before starting the schedule and you’ll always have correctly synchronised recordings.
