Hello,
Can someone confirm the max SD card capacity that an Audiomoth (latest round) can cope with? Specifically, would a 64GB card be okay?
The SD card guide on this website says that the capacity must not exceed 32 GB.
However, the cards which were available with Groupgets appeared to be 64GB (although the accompanying picture was of a 32GB card).
I also notice that some people in the forums are using larger cards.
64GB cards work fine with AudioMoth. However, they need to be formatted as FAT cards and apparently the default formatting software on Windows won't do this for cards greater than 32GB. You can use a separate application to format the cards though.
Thanks very much Alex.
I've let GroupGets know and they'll update the image and the text to be consistent. Thanks for pointing this out.
Hi Alex. I just wanted to confirm. I have audiomoth units from Round 7. They can handle 64gb cards just fine as long as I format them properly? Thanks!
Hi Dan,
Yes. The current AudioMoth firmware (1.2.1 and less) only works with FAT32 formatted SD cards. Most SD cards less than 32GB come pre-formatted as FAT32. SD cards that are larger than 32GB normally come pre-formatted as exFAT. In order to use them on AudioMoth you just need to re-format them. This is straightforward on macOS and Linux, but Windows won't let you format cards larger than 32GB as FAT32 using the built in tools. The work around is just to download a third party Windows application that will.
However, from AudioMoth firmware version 1.2.2, which will be out in a couple of weeks and will come pre-installed on the Round 8 AudioMoth, we will be able to support both FAT32 and exFAT SD cards so you can just use either straight out of the box.
Alex
Hi Alex,
Just to follow up on the info about the 1.2.2. version supporting both FAT32 and exFAT SD cards: Does this mean that the new Audiomoths (bought this week) support larger SD cards of up to 512 GB without having to reformat the cards?
Yes, we haven't tried anything larger than 64GB ourselves but the newer firmware supports both FAT32 and exFAT. SD cards larger than 32GB are normally supplied formatted as exFAT (although they can all be formatted as FAT32 as well) and can now be used out of the box without reformatting.
Thinking of buying in the group get and wondering if anyone has tested the 128gb yet?
128Gb works fine with my Audiomoth. But I am curious if any person tried 256Gb or above?
