25+ printed since the first draft in Jan 2019, and many field-tested. Let me know how you'd improve this!
I am looking for a souce for the membrane. I tried on Alibaba, however the shipping was $25 for one and $60 for ten.
Yeah let's connect somehow - I can't DM you on Twitter either. https://twitter.com/rayleonard55
It looks like the forum has changed quite a bit, and I no longer see DM capabilities. Ah well. Glad to see the interest. Please reach out to https://twitter.com/everywhyguy and we can continue the conversation. Would love to learn more about your use case.
Hi rleonard! Sounds like a cool application. V3 is the way to go, and it's working well in the field now. The only un-addressed feedback at this point is to tolerate sloppy printers a bit better around the o-ring area. I do have some extras from the development process if you don't have a good printer handy. Happy to entertain customized versions with any donation to Bat Conservation International. Just needs to be vector - DXF or SVG should work in Fusion 360. DM if you're interested.
@Brandon Heller My organization is using the AudioMoth ( and the V3 enclosure ) for wolf howl research - I'd like to print with an embossed wolf head instead of the bat. I'm a Solidworks user, so if the native CAD file is in SWX I could easily change the logo. Any chance of this, or of getting the STL file with a wolf logo?
Does anybody know an online source of acoustic membranes other than Alibaba? I can't even find anything on Ebay.
A problem with this design is that colors of 3D printing materials tend to be bright (thus attracting curious people...). Any way to get more olive or brownish materials?
In https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/56767-audiomoth-vault-v3, you list:
"Parts you’ll need:
Acoustic membrane: 6mm ID, 10mm OD, adhesive backed"
what do ID and OD mean? The provided link
has 9 options from 4*2mm to 10*6mm, which one should I select?
That’s was my first try. Thumbscrews fell off so I skipped them. Maybe I need bigger hex heads and nuts, and then they would stay into thumbscrews?
One minor misunderstanding was that I put the lid upside down and it was hard to remove it. And I did it twice 😊 So I wrote on lid which side is bottom so that it does not happen again. I will stick with this case! Thanks!
V3 looks like this:
I know of one ~60 case order for the V3, and I did a 10-case V1 order myself to test out 3DHubs. It came to $10 per in a tiny quantity, which includes production and materials for PETG. Quality varied, but all were usable; it's a functional part in the field, so it was good enough, and the V3 design removes the need for precision pretty much everywhere, since the magnet holes are gone. If your V1s are going in the field, taping the seam and potentially just flipping it upside can be be helpful. Just make sure to test before deploying.
Glad to hear, @alex.bush. BTW, there's a new version (v3) up on PrusaPrinters, with a number of improvements. The PrusaPrinters site prevents me from changing the v1 site to link to my own design (!) so you might not have seen this.
As always, interested in any feedback/usage. https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/56767-audiomoth-vault-v3
@Brandon Heller - wanted to add my thanks for posting this solution. I've made 30 so I hope they will allw me to get a lot of use from the AudioMoths. Couldn't get hold of any official cases, and although the cost of getting these made with a commerical 3D printer is much more than indicated for the materials (about £11), its still about 30% cheaper in total than ordering the official version.
Hi - my brother in law just made me version 2 of this. It looks great but I wonder if it could do making slightly bigger to accommodate silica gel sachet, and to have some sort of lip over the hole as added insurance against water ingress? we reckon it cost about 80p for the case.
How do you put fix the acoustic membrane in place?
Many thanks. Excuse my ignorance: if I send the thingiverse link to a 3D printing shop, do I need to tell them about any particular option for printing materials?
@Andris Dekants It looks like other cases (https://store.groupgets.com/collections/audiomoth) aren't available for premade purchase, but you could commission your own prints of this one with the linked .stl files using an online fab house like 3DHubs.com or Shapeways, or find a local 3D printer person. I have no experience with either, though. If you're looking to test a small number, reach out directly, and I'll see what I can do.
Would love to order these cases already premade!
