Hi all,
After months of using AM for fieldwork I've noticed some of them create audio files with 0kb. Usually they do it (but not all of them do it) when battery voltage is approaching the 3'6V. But a few do it regardless the battery level.
Have anyone come across this issue and the reason of it?
Many thanks,
Alex, entao... no cartão SANDISK EXTREME nao aprece nada gravado. Como informei, nem 0 KB é gravado
Alex, entao... no cartão SANDISK EXTREME nao aprece nada gravado. Como informei, nem 0 KB é gravado
Outra coisa, gravei outros arquivos do meu computador no cartão, e gravou normalmente
Did you reformat both the cards to exFAT or FAT32? Both should work.
Can you post the CONFIG.TXT file that was written to the SD card here.
I suspect that either the battery is going flat - the voltage reported in the last successful file will tell you that - or the SD card is full - reformat it as FAT32 or exFAT - deleting files often just hides them and leaves no space in the file allocation table.
Can you post a screenshot of the contents of the SD card, the CONFIG.TXT file, and one of the non-0KB files. Also try reformatting the SD card and try again.
Alex boa noite.
Alex firmware instalado 1,5 é oque aparece no ID DO APARELHO NO PROGRAMA DE CONFIGURAÇÃO
If the LED are flashing, then don't worry about the manual steps. Just switch to USB/OFF and the Flash App will find the AudioMoth and allow you to re-flash it.
Outra coisa, o LED vermelha nao pisca, fica ligado constatemente.
Alex boa tarde!!!
The 'power down' is really just the AudioMoth switching to the bootloader mode and starting the flash process. This should work fine - I flash many AudioMoth this way each week. Double check the USB cable, and try again. If the AudioMoth doesn't respond, use the 'Manual Switch to Flash Mode' option in the Flash App.
Boa noite Alex!!!
Alguém pode me ajudar?
Cool Thanks Alex.
I'll try and catch tomorrows dawn chorus with a fresh set of batteries. The Config app seems to be the latest so should be all set.
Thanks again
Darren
Your AudioMoth has version 1.6.0 installed (see the text on the GUI) so that's fine. Make sure you only run either the Flash App or the Config App at the same time as they will both be trying to talk to the same device and will likely confuse each other. You should update the Config App to the latest version as well. The band-pass filter will definitely cut down on the road noise and works really nicely for bird song. The amplitude threshold works like voice activated recording - it will only record to SD card the segments of sound that are above the set threshold. This acts to reduce the audio that is collected and sometimes makes processing easier but isn't required - you can filter the recordings without using the amplitude threshold.
Latest firmware installed.
Do I 'Flash Audio Moth'?
Hi Alex
Going back to your previous comments, Yes I was using the threshold, I've just removed the threshold and it's all working fine now, on a 15min record, 15 files each 55 seconds. What I'm trying to do is record the dawn chorus at a local inner city nature reserve, so followed the suggested configuration for bird song, including threshold set to 512, which cuts out road noise, but seems limited to recording short bursts of birdsong, close to the device, rather than the ambient bird song using the longest file length possible, to use as a soundscape for a video work.
Having trouble with firmware update as keep getting incompatibility error messages.
Cheers
Darren
If you download the Flash App here - https://www.openacousticdevices.info/applications - it will automatically install and then you can download and install the latest firmware version which will be at the top of the list in the app GUI.
Hi Alex
Can you post a link to the firmware and a few instructions on how to install. I've downloaded it and can't even open the readme file as it's not supported by Acrobat, (mac os). Using long life alkaline batteries, although I'm aware lithium are better, so will pop out and buy some later. Just running another test as forgot to put the SD card in last time Doh!
Cheers Darren
What type of batteries are you using?
These files have zero length so can't be opened. I'm not sure why you are getting these but they are possibly unrelated to the short files. When you described the files as being short previously, did they all end with 'T.WAV'? This would mean that they are 'amplitude threshold' recordings which will be shorter than the described length as the quiet periods are removed. The Config App has an 'Expand AudioMoth T.WAV Files' option to return them to their original length with the silent periods re-inserted. A couple of things to do: 1) Update the firmware to the latest version - 1.6.0. Make sure you power-down the AudioMoth without batteries and USB cable after updating. 2) Update the Config App to the latest version - 1.5.0. 3) Try a recording again without enabling the 'Amplitude Theshold' check box. If you can do that and show a listing of the files on the SD card, and post one of the files here that would be great.
Seems like corrupt files to me.
Hi Alex
Tried making the recording times longer, now no files are being recorded:
Great. Check the comments in the WAV file headers. The AudioMoth will be telling you why it cut the files short.
Hi Alex, I'm using the recommended SD card which I brought along with the device. I've changed the batteries, updated the configuration app, and set up a short scheduled record experiment. Will let you know how it works out. Darren
Hi Darren, The configuration app shows you the current time on the device. This will always default to 00:00:00 01/01/1970 for a device that is plugged in fresh after a battery change. If you check the WAV file header comments, or post a file somewhere I can see it, the AudioMoth will have described why the files are shorter than requested. You can only get readable short files if the AudioMoth has actually closed them and it will always describe why it has done so in the file header. Any 0 length files are due to the AudioMoth not being able to close the file - normally due to an SD card write error which is often caused by low batteries. This sounds like batteries are running down. What model of SD card are you using? Alex
Hi. I'm having the same issue. I'm getting some files which are fine but very short recordings, just a couple of seconds in some cases, and random blank files with a Jan 1st 1970 date stamp. The last attempt just has blank files. Tried a number of SD cards and fresh batteries but it seems to be getting progressively
worse and now the configuration app has also reset to Jan1st 1970. Any advice? Thanks Darren
Great Alex, thank you very much for the quick reply. It must be a sd problem then.
Cheers,
Robert
Hi Robert, The 0KB files result when the AudioMoth has opened a file but was not able to close it. This normally happens due to the battery running down during a recording. The 'Enable low-voltage cut-off' option attempts to prevent this by stopping recordings early due to the the low voltage but it is still possible for the write to fail at low voltages depending on the type of SD card. Taking the SD card out during recording, or any other SD card write failure, will also result in a 0KB file as the file directory is updated on opening the file and the file size is only updated when the file is completely closed.
