If you have a handheld GPS you can use Myotisoft Transect to sync your GPS track log with your acoustic files. I've never used it before, so I don't know how well it works. When you say "bats that ought not to be there", do you mean it is IDing bat species that aren't likely to be in the area where you were recording? If so, when you select your region (e.g., United Kingdom) in the classifier you're using (e.g., Bats of Europe), it will select all the European species known to occur in the United Kingdom. You can further tune it to only identify species known to occur in your particular region by deselecting the checked boxes next to the species in the list that are unlikely to be where you were recording.

I would clamp it into a cell phone tripod adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Vastar-Universal-Smartphone-Horizontal-Adjustable/dp/B01L3B5PBI/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=cell+phone+tripod+adapter&qid=1582142076&sr=8-3) and set it up on a small tripod away from the observer. I've done similar point count surveys using an audio recorder, and I found it was best to set it up and walk at least 10 m away.

Also, for those who are making their own enclosures and need to make more than a few, I would suggest making a jig for cutting the hole for your microphone. It will speed things up and help you get it in the right location each time. I did this yesterday with a drill press on a larger batch of enclosures and it was so much better.

A couple of updates: These have been out for a few weeks, and there was no moisture inside the enclosures. I was pleased with the quality of recordings that we got. One of the AudioMoths picked up frogs calling where the nearest wetland was approximately 200 m away. I recently got some new AudioMoths from the last GroupGets campaign and discovered that the recessed switch doesn't work well for this enclosure setup. When the AudioMoth is fastened to the lid, the switch is inaccessible. I resolved this by cutting away some of the plastic on the battery housing. Now I'm able to access the switch with some tweezers.

I was just flashing my AudioMoths in Powershell again, and I thought I would add this here for any Windows 10 users who are struggling with flashing their units. You need to type ".\" before typing "flash.exe" or it will give an error message. Other than that, it is the same as described in the AudioMoth Manual.

Hi Line: I can't offer much help if you're already familiar with recording bats on other detectors and are just wanting to know specifically about the AudioMoth, as I haven't experimented with recording bats with it yet. I can tell you that it is generally really difficult to determine how close a bat must be to a bat detector to get a good recording. Many variables influence detection range including the direction the bat is facing in relation to the mic, weather conditions, and the frequency niche of the species. My experience with feeding buzzes (in western Canada) is that they are typically much weaker than search phase pulses - amplitude basically trails off. For the best results, you'll want to get the AudioMoth as close to productive foraging areas as possible. Good luck with your project. Mike
